You know how me and others are always ranting about the arbitrary silliness of "literary fiction" and "genre fiction"? Well, The Literary Omnivore, aka Clare, is just as sick and fed up of it as Brian Murphy and I am - to the point where she made a video on the subject.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I'm going to be linking to this in future whenever someone brings up the "literary/genre fiction" false dichotomy.
Yes she is!
ReplyDeleteDo people think that genre authors don't have access to techniques like symbolism, or don't understand applicability, or can't write convincing, human characters? Genre is a style of fiction that uses certain superficial elements, like swords and armor, or aliens and robots. That's pretty much it. The worst of it may be guilty of slipping into repetitive formula, but the best of it certainly qualifies as "literature" (whatever that means).
She talks far too fast. As for the content, I agree completely.
ReplyDeleteI want to marry her.
ReplyDeleteClare is young, pretty, intelligent and blonde, breaking the stereotypes about nerds and book-minded people
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking my rant here! A wonderful thing to find on my birthday, heh.
ReplyDeleteHappy (belated) birthday, Clare, so glad to see you over here!
