Yes, it does.
I'm looking forward to Ironclad a lot more than I was looking forward to Robin Hood. Why? Brian Cox. This guy is awesome. Plus James Purefoy, of who I am now quite a fan, Derek Jacobi, Vladimir Goddamn Kulich! That's in addition to setting it during a Medieval conflict that's not about the Crusades or Robin Hood, which is a plus.
Now, there are a few things I'm a bit iffy about: I really hope Kate Mara - sadly not Kate O'Mara, as I mistakenly thought - the requisite Action Chick is fairly believable (i.e. not an 80lb soaking wet waif), Purefoy is really far too young to play Marshall at this point in time, and I'm not sure about those giant double-bitted axes the besiegers were wielding. Plus that tagline on the poster is a bit... well, it's a bit something.
THIS. IS. SPARTA!
Ah well. I still want to see it. There's been a dearth of really good medieval films, especially given the tremendous disappointments of Kingdom of Heaven and Robin Hood.
Stereotypic gorramned herky-jerky crap that passes for camerawork in action movies nowadays. Even the non-actions scenes are wobbly.
ReplyDeleteWot, have they broken all the steadicams in Whorellywood?
Tex
(something for the ADHD/gamer--pardon the redundancy--crowd, one gathers.
That does look pretty darn up and at em. Haven't seen a good siege film in a while either.
ReplyDeleteHuh, I guess shakeycam's so ubiquitous I didn't even notice it, Tex. Though I hate hate HATED it in Star Trek.
ReplyDeleteCharles, I can't even recall a good siege film, sad to say. I'm sure they exist, somewhere...
I've been a fan of Brian Cox since Manhunter. His portrayal of Hanibal Lector wasn't as Over the Top as Anthony Hopkin's but he was still chilling. James Purefoy I've admired since his turn as Marc Anthony in HBO's Rome and Derek Jacobi I saw on stage at Stratford in Much Ado About Nothing back when he was riding high on his I, Claudius fame. I'd probably see it for the cast alone, though it looks like it might be a decent film.
ReplyDeleteI dunno when/if this is coming out in the US.. but I'm certainly looking forward to it. It's an interesting idea because no one really ever does any movies on King John.. sure occasionally prince john shows up in Robin Hood movies.. but apart from the Shakespeare play really dosen't ever get anything on his own..
ReplyDeleteI'm REALLY looking forward to this, despite the questionable poster (I've seen worst). The cast alone will make it worth seeing.
ReplyDeletea good siege film, Zulu by Cy Enfield
ReplyDeletethis is about the Barons war?
by the way all the action related films superheroes, epics... seems to have the same bso with epic choirs, I'm a bit bored with that
have you seen Centurion? a kind of Anabasis in the north of the roman Britain, landscapes and production design very good, the story a bit previsible? what's the word in english? but entertaining and fast pace, good fight scenes but the subplot of the villain in the group of romans isn't very explained, the best character is Etain the native tracker, but she isn't pictish, she is from a southern tribe masacred by romans and adopted by pictish, I understand this... and although she does a very good job why an slave origin actress to perform a celt woman?
Francisco...
ehem... I think is better to say slavic origin...
ReplyDeleteFrancisco...
