"Conan has been done an awful lot in comics, books and video games, but not so much in movies. With the sheer number of stories that have been told over the years, even for the half-century before the 1982 movie, it's actually quite astonishing that there haven't been more films made."
What The Uninformed Masses and People Who Don't Know How To Use The Internet Know
1982 May Conan the Barbarian (Universal)
1984 June Conan the Destroyer (Universal)
2011 August Conan the Barbarian (Lionsgate)
"OH MY GOD HOLLYWOOD HAS RUN OUT OF IDEAS YOU CAN'T TOP THE ORIGINAL HOW CAN THEY REMAKE CONAN THE BARBARIAN AHNOLD WAS PERFECT THIS IS SACRILEGE BLASPHEMY OUTRAGEOUS"
Heh. I know even less than the Uninformed Masses. I've only owned one Conan the Barbarian book in my life. And that's the only one I've read. =)
ReplyDeleteAwesome post.
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha ha!! Awesome!
ReplyDeleteTo all intents and purposes this is a rebooted remake. So what's the point exactly? You can't blame the public conception on crap marketing ploys that use imagery, story and even the same title from the '82 film. I would still rather it was John Milius and Arnhuld doing "King Conan: Crown of Iron" than this Nispel helmed Momoa vehicle riffing creakilly on the Milius movie. At least it would be something new. Conan will never have the same recognition as Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes or Batman. He was never marketed in the writers own lifetime or for a long while afterward and only became popular (for good or bad) when he was being pastiched. The purity of Howard's character was diluted as far back as "The god in the bowl"(1952?) by de Camp. One things for sure. You won't get a more sincere attempt at making good cinema out of Conan than the Milius attempt.
ReplyDeleteWhat do the colours mean?
ReplyDeleteRed Passion = REH?
Crimson Blot = REH with altered text?
Deep Purple = Pastiches?
Green Jelly = Comics?
Olive Oil = Software?
Cyanide = Film?
Yellow Vomit = Animation?
I guess I'm a Red and Green guy.
To all intents and purposes this is a rebooted remake.
ReplyDeleteDoes not compute.

Partly their fault, but never underestimate the power of ignorance, willful or not.

Sure, when the REH (and REH-oriented) Conan has been taking back the brand since the new century, let's scrap all progress and set it back three decades. The new movie's concessions to Milius don't help either.
Conan will never have the same recognition as Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes or Batman.
Seriously? One is the archetypal jungle man, one the archetypal detective, and one's as well known as Superman. Conan is the archetypal barbarian.
You won't get a more sincere attempt at making good cinema out of Conan than the Milius attempt.
Milius basically stole the brand. This movie's not going to exorcise his spirit from it, but it's a start, and I dream of the one that finally can.
Quick. Alert the Zoo. Someone left the door on the monkey cage open.
