ReplyDeleteA Massimo Carnevale cover and Davide Gianfelice doing the art -- this is basically a Northlanders reunion. That book was my first exposure to Wood. Gianfelice drew the first and best story arc, "Sven the Returned". Other artists followed but I liked the first the best.

Indeed, but I doubt I'll be picking up the series. Maybe when the trade comes out, and that's a big maybe.
DeleteHey, do you read HELLBOY / BPRD? Because the latest BPRD mini, a two parter called ABYSS OF TIME, is more than a little reminiscent of the James Allison stories, especially VALLEY OF THE WORM. (Hey, considering the massive Weird Tales influence on Hellboy and it's satellite books, it probably was the inspiration.) James Harren did the art and he's put to much, much better use there than he was in Wood's Conan. Fans hurting for some decent Howardian "barbarians vs. lovecraftian monsters" action might want to check it out.
ReplyDeleteI don't read Hellboy, but my collaborator is always on at me to read it (plus the "Lovecraftian Fairyland" side is very appealing). Sounds very much like it's up my alley!

ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to my work, I tend to "percolate" a lot: that is, come up with ideas, put them in a figurative coffee pot, and let them stew for a while. Sometimes I'll come back to it and my unconscious/muse/angel/little green alien friend will present something better than if I spent ages slaving over it. That's where the Sword & Dinosaur thing is right now, although I looked at it recently, and I think I have a great "hook" for it.

Felice shows a slightly manlier Conan but Carnevale is going berserk in his emo depiction of Conan: some MILF Belit and some young twerp pretending to be Conan are exchanging LSD pills in the forest.
ReplyDeleteThis is as far as it could ever be from Howard's vision in the original QotBC with this shit cover.
Not that Carnevale doesn't know how to draw, but his fairyland depictions showcasing a wiry emo running around in MyLittlePony surroundings are out of subject.
Probably Wood and the artistic direction at Dark Horse told Carnevale "we have to appeal to a NEW public"
What an interesting public that must be (vomits all his lunch out)

Well, Howard Days 2013 has "Howard in Comics" as the theme, so I'll likely be reading up on things. I'm looking at putting "Midnight God" up soon, though it'll be in five parts (as per the issues). I don't have a schedule ("trying is the first step to failure, so never try" - Homer Simpson) but tend to do things on an ad-hoc basis.
