Wouldn't naked women be at a significant disadvantage in a fight? I don't mean in terms of their strength (which is certainly also a major issue), but due to their breasts. I would imagine that two large flabby pieces of fat on your chest would be a major hindrance when trying to swing a sword or dodge an incomming attack? Wouldn't it make more sense to at least bind their bosoms?

It would make sense if a Cimmerian woman's bosom were incumbent enough that a bit of support would be necessary - but then, male naked fighters never seemed bother with jockstraps or loincloths, either!

From a Hyborian scholarship point of view, I justify it as being a case of psychology trumping practicality: Cimmerians, like Howard's Gaels, seemed to shun armour at the best of times despite the Aesir, Vanir and Hyperboreans being clad in mail. Thus, the particularly devoted/crazy Cimmerians would shun even their wolf and panther-skins in battle. I see the Phantoms as being a relative minority composed of elite warriors, like the Gaesatae of ancient Gaul. Certainly I don't think all Cimmerian women would've fought like this, nor Cimmerian men, for that matter.

Also, while I'm on a tangent, in terms of weapons, wouldn't a spear be a better weapon for a woman than a sword? The reach would balance out their lack or relative agility and strength compared to men.

True, but Howard's reference to naked Cimmerian warrior women specifically mentioned swords, so I imagined they were big claymores: that means they could be wielded two-handed, and offered some versatility in combat. It would also explain the lack of shields: the naked Celts usually had at least a big shield to offer some protection.

Anyways, wish you all the best in the new year, Taranaich, and best of luck to you with your comic!

Thank you!Taranaichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02176999342965850175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7177193073415704349.post-88745118121828368192012-12-28T18:10:41.686+00:002012-12-28T18:10:41.686+00:00Dog days indeed!Dog days indeed!Taranaichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02176999342965850175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7177193073415704349.post-81712890631342275592012-12-28T18:10:32.874+00:002012-12-28T18:10:32.874+00:00Merry Christmas, Charles, thanks!Merry Christmas, Charles, thanks!Taranaichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02176999342965850175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7177193073415704349.post-55950519002854121042012-12-28T18:10:21.182+00:002012-12-28T18:10:21.182+00:00Hail!Hail!Taranaichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02176999342965850175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7177193073415704349.post-80220114377272389432012-12-28T18:10:10.795+00:002012-12-28T18:10:10.795+00:00And the same to you, Tex, and thanks! And the same to you, Tex, and thanks!Taranaichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02176999342965850175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7177193073415704349.post-4869168858986550692012-12-28T18:10:00.810+00:002012-12-28T18:10:00.810+00:00Thanks, Keith! Thanks, Keith!Taranaichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02176999342965850175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7177193073415704349.post-62252283577926429832012-12-28T08:20:02.774+00:002012-12-28T08:20:02.774+00:00Nicely written and happy holidays!
