His character is the author of a how too book " You Can't Read ".. which is basically him trashing people for not looking at things exactly the same way he does..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=be0bBWnUrnYLagomorph Rexhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06385231158384929598noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7177193073415704349.post-65939309018566103222010-12-21T15:06:18.063+00:002010-12-21T15:06:18.063+00:00Oh dear, I missed Carl:

But then, I'm sure even the most intelligent person has their silly moments, like that time Stephen Fry said he didn't think women enjoyed sex as much as men did.Taranaichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02176999342965850175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7177193073415704349.post-92023603301750029302010-12-21T14:01:18.669+00:002010-12-21T14:01:18.669+00:00Cheers for the link, Taran!
I'm not offended ...Cheers for the link, Taran!

I'm not offended by the term literary fiction, it does make me think of that genre that strives not to be a genre (and is really only celebrated when it has aspects of one), so it does tell me the gist of what I need to know.

I think it's a horrendous false dichotomy that's only a few tiptoes away from making a division between "literature" and "not literature" (usually SF, fantasy, horror, thriller, romance and whatnot). I hate that.

People shouldn't be preoccupied with trying to write fiction with respect to fitting into a genre (or the opposite), people should be preoccupied with writing a good story.

Like trying to take an abstract painting seriously when it was painted by a chimpanzee with his own feces. No, I'm not a snob who thinks art can only be paintings/sculptures/whatnot, but at the same time, I expect a bit of goddamn creation involved. Unmade beds require no goddamn effort. I just wish we had someone like Theo Jansen working in Britain: now that's a goddamn artist.Taranaichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02176999342965850175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7177193073415704349.post-3562208274435122562010-12-21T13:56:38.967+00:002010-12-21T13:56:38.967+00:00The funny thing is, of course, that people like Do...The funny thing is, of course, that people like Docx who envision themselves as somehow defending the intellectual integrity of "literary" writing are doing no more than I would be if I said "I like stories about dragons" (which, incidentally, would be one of the principal messages of Tolkien's famous essay on Beowulf) except that they are saying "I don't like stories about dragons, I like stories about (insert topic here) instead". As is tiringly typical, they confused personal taste with quality and then fall victim to an evangelistic impulse to tell the rest of us that we are semi-literate barbarians (cough!) if we don't share their personal taste.

Oh well!Carl Andersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08088507380154524745noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7177193073415704349.post-20744071782631535022010-12-21T06:12:23.459+00:002010-12-21T06:12:23.459+00:00"Literary Fiction"! A "non-genre" genre that isn't even interesting and people wouldn't bother to read if they weren't so worried about looking smart.
