It gives the character more depth and mystery in my opinion.
We know it's grim and we know he left to see other lands. We also know he came back occasionally, so if he escaped why did he come back. Probably had a love/hate relationship with Cimmeria and his countrymen. Why is there no mention of relations with Cimmeria when Conan is King, was he not interested. Conan is rightly a complex character, we don't need an origin or background to reveal that.Dave Rnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7177193073415704349.post-60278206067348937992011-01-19T23:32:13.093+00:002011-01-19T23:32:13.093+00:00The seeming fascination with Conan's family an... The seeming fascination with Conan's family and homeland has always struck me as a bit odd because I got the impression from Howard that Cimmeria was a pretty boring place - all cloudy and gray with grim, often sullen inhabitants. Not that we don't get some interesting glimpses of it through Conan's remarks but generally I don't really want to see Conan pastichers spending a lot of time there.

I don't really think of Cimmeria as boring, so much as it's depressing, bleak and oppressive. I imagine Cimmeria to be like Ingmar Bergman's black and white films in tone, the sort of place that just destroys any sense of cheer and happiness. I don't think anyone's really "got" Cimmeria, be it in comics or pastiches. John Maddox Roberts came closest, but it still didn't come close to the sense of overwhelming grimness. Until somebody gets Cimmeria, I'd rather they left the country alone than come up with garbage like Jack Kirby-esque Venarium or Cheerful Rustic Peasants.

Nonetheless, I think Howard *might* have been planning to do so at one point. I'll discuss this in a later article, though.Taranaichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02176999342965850175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7177193073415704349.post-41316998056111309392011-01-19T17:47:48.178+00:002011-01-19T17:47:48.178+00:00The seeming fascination with Conan's family an...The seeming fascination with Conan's family and homeland has always struck me as a bit odd because I got the impression from Howard that Cimmeria was a pretty boring place - all cloudy and gray with grim, often sullen inhabitants.
